Update: Lite-On not building BluRay for Xbox

Seems like the information I was going by in my previous post was wrong. According to IT Forum the rumor that Lite-on or anybody else is manufacturing BluRay drives for Microsoft is false, and if you read what they have to say, it’s totally convincing.

Sorry if you had your hopes raised by what I said before. Apparently, the main reason for not making BluRay available on the Xbox, apart from the cost, is that Sony has a monopoly on BD-ROM pickup heads. MS and Sony are in direct competition (duh), and it don’t take a lot of imagination to see Sony could easily hold up supplies of this essential component. MS would be stupid to give their competition this sort of leverage.

Shame, though.
