Microsoft is releasing a new Xbox controller that eliminates the bugs that make the D-pad on the standard model pretty much useless in some games.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s a limited edition, and will only be shipped as part of a bundle, and won’t be available in the US. There are no plans to change the standard controller.
So, if you were hoping to get a better controller from Microsoft, you may as well forget it (although it may possibly be released as part of another bundle down the line), at least for now. That leaves you with the option of buying an after-market controller or fixing it yourself.
Meanwhile, the rumors that price drops are on the way seems to be confirmed by a sneak peek at a flyer featured on Engadget who price the Elite at $399, the 60GB version at $299, and the Arcade at $199. As they say, “Target date for truth? September 7th — so stay tuned.”

According to Pure Overclock, Lite-on are currently developing a built-in BD-ROM drive for the next generation of Xbox 360 consoles, for shipping from the middle of this year onwards.
Microsoft have consistently denied reports that they were planning a Blu-Ray drive, but this is pretty much business as usual with them. Lite-On have refused to comment, citing “client confidentiality,” and there is nothing on their website about it.
If the report is true, it means that there’s a new console in the works, with a new 170 watt power supply instead of the current 210 watt - which might help on the cooling front.
Meanwhile, Xbox Live users with HD DVD will be offered an upgrade next time they are watching a movie on HD DVD and logged in. This is billed as the last upgrade, though given Microsoft’s past history it may just be the first of many “last” updates.

If you’ve been thinking of getting a new case for your Xbox 360, there’s a new contender waiting in the wings from Lian Li. Made of anodised aluminum, there’s space for everything inside, including the HDMI if you are transferring an Elite console. The power unit is left external, helping the 120mm fan to keep your console as cool as can be.
You can see just how cool this new case is in this video.
